WC&B Amicus Briefs
VERMONT RIGHT TO LIFE COMMITTEE, INC. AND VERMONT RIGHT TO LIFE COMMITTEE - FUND FOR INDEPENDENT POLITICAL EXPENDITURES, Petitioners, v. WILLIAM H. SORRELL, in his official capacity as Vermont Attorney General, et al.
On behalf of the United States Constitutional Rights Legal Defense Fund and the National Right to Work Committee, Webster, Chamberlain & Bean, LLP filed an amicus brief in support of a petition for cert filed with the U.S. Supreme Court by the Vermont Right to Life Committee. The US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit upheld challenges to Vermont’s campaign finance law. Portions of this law have been challenged because they impose substantial burdens on groups whose major purpose is not the electing or defeat of a candidate. This case is part of an alarming and growing trend in which states are extending both disclosure requirements and political committee burdens to issue speech.
